Russia Foresees ‘Humiliating Fiasco’ For US In Ukraine Support, Kremlin Drops ‘Vietnam And Afghanistan’ Reminder

In a recent development, the Kremlin has issued a warning that the United States support for Ukraine could culminate in a ‘humiliating fiasco’, drawing parallels with Vietnam and Afghanistan. This comes as the US Congress is on the verge of approving a $60 billion aid package.

What Happened: The Kremlin has expressed concerns over the US’s ongoing support for Ukraine, predicting a potential long-term disaster. This statement comes in the wake of the US Congress’s anticipated approval of a substantial aid package for Ukraine, despite inconsistent support from American conservatives, reported The Hill.

After two years of conflict, the Russian military has made considerable progress. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated, “Washington’s deeper and deeper immersion in the hybrid war against Russia will turn into a loud and humiliating fiasco for United States such as Vietnam and Afghanistan.”

The House passed a comprehensive foreign aid bill on Saturday, which includes funds for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, amounting to $95 billion. The Senate is expected to endorse the measure, which is backed by President Biden.

Ukrainian leaders and American military experts, including CIA Director William Burns, have been advocating for Congress to fund Ukraine aid for several months. Burns cautioned last week that Ukrainian soldiers are running low on arms and cannot defend against Russia independently.

Despite urgent appeals for aid, the US and NATO allies have declined to deploy their own troops to Ukraine, marking a key difference from the conflicts in Vietnam and Afghanistan.

Why It Matters: The House’s decision to pass the aid bill came after an unusual Saturday session, during which several key bills were addressed, including aid for Taiwan, Ukraine, and Israel.

Former Vice President Mike Pence had earlier urged the U.S. Congress to increase support for Ukraine, warning of potential broader implications for NATO should Russia prevail.
