Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) Acquires Drizly As Uber Eats Drivers Accuse It Of Using Racist Facial Recognition Software

Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) has completed Drizly’s acquisition, and the two companies are expected to start integrating their complementary services and delivery apps.

Uber acquires Drizly

The acquisition consideration was around $ 1.1 billion, comprising nearly 18.7 million newly issued Uber common shares and cash. Drizly is an on-demand alcohol marketplace with several local retailers offering unmatched shopping experiences and a wide selection of spirits, wine, and beer. The alcohol marketplace will now be an Uber subsidiary and will feature within the Uber Eats app in the coming months but will also maintain a separate Drizly app.

Uber using racist facial recognition software

Uber is under scrutiny regarding a racially biased algorithm that is keeping some drivers out of work.  Abiodun Ogunyemi, who has been a driver for Uber Eats since February 2020, said that when he submitted his photo for verification on the app, the software didn’t recognize him, and he was blocked from accessing his account.  Ongunyemi, who is black, is among Uber drivers that have been prevented from getting work because of a racist facial recognition tech.

Three Uber drivers that allegedly lost their jobs because of enforcing COVID-19 protocols are squaring off with their former employers supported by a local union in British Columbia. UFCW 1518 has filed a complaint to the British Columbia Labour Relations Board against the ride-sharing company.

A couple who met in Uberpool weds four years later.

Two love birds that met in an Uberpool ride for years ago have wed. Rachel Chazanovitz and Mark Desantis were separated from friends in 2017 while celebrating Halloween in South Boston when they simultaneously ordered UberPool. UberPool is a ride-sharing option that gives passengers headed in the same direction cheaper fare. Then two wanted to evade Halloween surge pricing. So the two got married on October 2 on a restaurant patio, and their wedding was on #FromUberRiderToGroomAndBride.
