Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) Skype For Business Is Now Retired; They Have The Next Move

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) announced its migration from Skype for Business to Teams Only two years ago. A lot of organizations have realized the benefits of Teams since then. Skype for Business retired officially on July 31.

What will happen to those who have not migrated yet?

Since August 1, there have been ongoing assisted upgrades from Skype for Business to Teams Only. This means that Microsoft has assisted the organizations that were not able to upgrade to do so.

Organizations that are scheduled for an upgrade received a notification about the upgrade 90 days before. In addition, Microsoft Teams said that these organizations will be able to use Skype for Business until their transition is over.

Microsoft said that the assisted upgrades will help the organizations to transit successfully. Upgrade guidance is also meant to have all the details that users should know before the upgrade. This guidance also shows how organizations can self-upgrade themselves before the scheduled date. 

“The upgrade experience will vary depending on whether you have Skype for Business Online-only or Skype for Business Online with hybrid,” said Microsoft Teams in a blogpost.

  • Skype for Business Online-only: The upgrade process will use the TeamsUpgradeOveridePolicy. This policy will place all the Skype for Business Online users in a Teams Only Mode.
  • The Skype for Business Online in hybrid mode: In this environment, there could be users in three categories, as mentioned in the upgrade guidance by Microsoft Team. The will switch the users in Skype for Business Online-only mode to `Teams Only’ mode.

Once the upgrade is over, organizations will have to sign out of  Skype for Business and use Teams Only mode.

What has changed?

  • All the chats and calls will be started and received in Teams
  • An attempt to sign in to Skype for Business will be redirected to Teams Only mode
  • All meetings will be scheduled I a new plugin in Teams Only
  • Contacts should be migrated to Teams Only within 90 days after the Upgrade
  • Skype meetings will be converted to Teams meetings after the upgrade
