Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) has shown internet speeds of more than 4 Gbps downstream and upstream over cable.
Comcast working on bringing 10G full-duplex speeds to customers
The company conducted the test in Broadcom Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AVGO) full-duplex DOCSIS 4.0 chip, expected to support multi-gigabit download and upload speeds in the future. Full duplex means that download and upload speeds are the same. Currently, people can access download speeds of a gigabit per second, but uploads can crawl at 20 megabits per second.
Comcast’s test is part of its long-term target of reaching 10 gigabits per second full-duplex over the hybrid-fiber coaxial (HFC) network. The company’s HFC network leverages the superfast fiber-optic network tech and coaxial cables to customer’s homes. The company’s technologists in Denver and Philadelphia carried the test by installing Broadcom SOC in a network environment to monitor Full Duplex DOCSIS features’ performance. Future optimization will drive greater capacity.
The research arm of the cable sector, Cable Labs, supported Comcast to create the 10G platform through a multi-year global tech effort expected to enhance capacity and speeds over HFC networks significantly. Such internet speed became critical during the pandemic, and Comcast saw its traffic rising 32% last year.
The test lays the foundation for network operators such as Comcast to bring multigigabit upload and download speeds over connections so far installed in several homes globally. US cable operators have already installed networks on 85% of US homes.
DOCSIS 4.0 Full-Duplex enables operators to deliver superfast internet speeds.
Most importantly, Broadcom’s chip will be the first production chip developed through the DOCSIS 4.0 Full-Duplex standard. As a result, this represents a massive step forward in the race to bring ultrafast speeds to customers over HFC networks. Among the most significant breakthroughs in DOCSIS 4.0 Full-Duplex standard is efficient network spectrum utilization. Thus this allows operators to increase upload speeds without significantly jeopardizing download speeds.
The main advantage of DOCSIS 4.0 Full Duplex is the ability to establish a ground for operators to bring multigigabit speeds over existing networks to millions of homes without more construction projects.
