Baidu Inc (ADR) (NASDAQ:BIDU) Developing Alternative To Google Glass

Boston, MA 09/03/2014 (wallstreetpr) – Baidu Inc (ADR) (NASDAQ:BIDU) is preparing a wearable device that appears to be an alternative to Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL)’s Google Glass, PCWorld stated in an article. Unlike Google Glass, BaiduEye lacks optical display, and the company said that has been done deliberately so as to extend battery life. The company predicts an increase in voice and picture Internet searches compared with text-based searches.

More details on the smartphone

Baidu’s eyewear will offer visual scanning and identification of objects. The company showed off several prototypes of the device at its annual technology meeting. The headmounted device features an ear piece that feeds information to the user. It also has a camera that is attached to the left side and the camera is designed for snapping pictures and recognizing objects. The company said that users can retrieve more details about an object using the device. Users can, for example, scan a product that they wish to buy for such details as price and the vendor, and they can hear that information through the ear piece. The company also stated that more details about an object or a product can be displayed on a user’s smartphone.

Baidu Inc (ADR) (NASDAQ:BIDU) did not update on the release date or even the price of the device. However, the company said it was in the process of commercializing the device as it is already in partnership with some hardware vendors for the same. The company said that BaiduEye will be a useful aid for those interested in hand-free Internet searchers. Moreover, it said the device is designed to meet the needs in the education and shopping sectors.

Increase in voice and picture queries

According to Baidu Inc (ADR) (NASDAQ:BIDU)’s CEO, Robin Li, voice and picture-based Internet queries are becoming popular, and they are expected to surpass text-based searches within the next five years. The CEO also reported that their users in China make 500 or more voice-based Internet searches in a day, which further supports the relevance of BaiduEye.

Besides the eyewear, Baidu Inc (ADR) (NASDAQ:BIDU) is also working on other smart hardware that includes one that can help users scan and understand the quality of food or water.
