Angry birds as 3-D movie from Sony Corporation (ADR) (NYSE:SNE)

The most popular video game and the top selling mobile phone application, Angry Birds, is all set to move to the big screen as 3-D movie. The Espoo, Finland based Rovio Entertainment OY has decided to finance, develop and produce the movie which is to be distributed through Sony Pictures Entertainment. The movie is expected to hit the big screens on July 01, 2016.

Popularity of the game

The Angry Birds game had gained huge popularity with its different versions being downloaded more than 1.7 billion times across the world.  The game involves the players using a virtual sling shot to hurl the birds to target the cracking down of animals. In addition, the cartoon series of Angry Birds, which is available on few video on demand channels, had been viewed by more than 150 million viewers.

In addition to Angry Birds, the Rovio Entertainment OY also produces other mobile video games such as The Croods, Tiny Thief and The Ice Breaker. The Finland based game maker is closely held and is planning for an IPO shortly.

Distribution Rights

The distribution rights of the Angry Birds movie had been awarded to Tokyo based Sony Entertainment pictures amongst other major Hollywood studios which were competing for the bid. The American depository receipts of the parent company of Sony Entertainment Pictures, Sony Corp. (JP:6758)  had fell by 1.5 percent to close at $20.45. The ADRs had however gained by 83 percent this year owing to various reasons.
